Moab 2K+1: Story and Photos... On Saturday we left for San Francisco. The route that Stan and Dan suggested to us was Vegas to Reno to SF. Sounded good, so I started driving. As usual, Stan and Dan left at 11:30 and we left at noon. Then we stopped after 15 minutes for a half-hour long meal and gas-stop. Driving through the desert was oppressively hot. With the air set to "MAX A/C", it was bearable. I just wish that MAX A/C would blow in the "MIX" position rather than through the front vents that blow at you. We passed through what seemed to be practically ghost-towns in the desert...
After a while, I'd had enough of driving, so we stopped for gas, and I passed the wheel on to Ray. In the rear seat I played with Ray's GPS, checked out the map, and debated napping. Then I noticed a shorter route on the map. It went through Yosemite National Park instead of through Reno. It would save 100 miles of driving, though it'd be slower. What an opportunity! It'd get us out of the desert in an hour, and we'd get to go through a park! We wouldn't get to San Fransisco any quicker, but it'd be a more interesting route. We drove into Benton, down to a quarter-tank of gas left, thinking it'd be a good idea to fill up. Oops-- the only gas station in town was out of gas! ...So we continued on to Lee Vining, only about 50km away. On the way we passed through a forest of redwoods. They were spaced a distance apart, and there was no ground cover; the ground was gravel! We filled up with gas and asked about the road through Yosemite. Closed. ...So we took Route 108 through a different park, not too far North of Yosemite. The road was beautiful, though twisty. There was a sign that noted that trucks over 52 feet in length were not recommended to drive on this road. A few times I found myself pulling the car around a *sharp* turn in third gear, only to find out that the road went straight up after the turn, so I geared to 2nd, and then to first because the road was so damn steep!
After we got out of the other side of the park, it was totally dark with the exception of the full moon, and we found ourselves driving through towns with populations of 50-92... Tiny places. Then, I'm driving along a straight section with lots of space on either side for houses/businesses, when whump-whump I run over something! I stop a hundred meters down the road, wondering what I'd just driven over... I couldn't see anything on the road, and there was no blood on my car, and no apparent damage, and I wasn't dragging any dead animals, so we decided to continue on. I didn't really want to back up the road to find out what I'd hit... Marc said "once I hit a rabbit. This was much bigger than a rabbit". Oh well... Hope I didn't hit somebody's dog. We continued on until we were near San Francisco-- only about 45 minutes away. We tried to find a cheap motel, but the cheapest we could find was a Motel 6 at $51.99 per night for a single. We decided to save the CAD$25 each that it'd cost us, and slept in the car. We were able to find a place with no "NO PARKING" signs on Technology Drive. We parked next to a field of tall grass with a tank in it, and we cracked open the windows. The temperature was quite pleasant at the time (shortly after midnight). What a miserable night. The morning was quite beautiful, though, with the sun rising on this field of high grass... |
